Many parents worry that asking questions will make emotional issues worse. Yet, the opposite is true! Youth need to know they are seen and are heard. By having difficult conversations, you can open a door to important support for your child and teen. Asking questions such as, “Is anything worrying you?” is a way of showing that you care.

Ask and then listen! Making an observation such as, “It seems like something is making you sad,” is showing that you notice them. Your child may not say much right away but they ARE listening to your encouragement and it DOES make a difference.
