The Waves of Change luncheon promises to be the event of the year here in Tampa as we celebrate the achievements of two remarkable women: one of the world’s most accomplished entrepreneurs Sheila Johnson and Tampa’s first female mayor, The Honorable Sandra Warshaw Freedman. We are extremely excited that one of Tampa’s newest corporate partners, Johnson & Johnson Global, has signed on as our presenting sponsor for this major event celebrating women’s leadership.
This luncheon provides a chance for women to network, develop relationships and discuss issues affecting women in business and their personal lives.
A Community Conversation format with Sheila Johnson will be moderated by Kelly McBride, with questions from her, along with those women in the audience.
Kelly McBride is the Vice President at the Poynter Institute, where she is leading a transformation in how professional journalists serve citizens. She is also a writer, teacher and one of the country’s leading voices when it comes to media ethics. The world’s largest newsrooms, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, NPR and the BBC, frequently cite her expertise.
She has a journalism degree from Mizzou and a theology degree from Gonzaga. She spent 15 years as a daily newspaper reporter before becoming a media ethicist.
In addition to running the ethics department at Poynter, she has served as the director of the college fellowship program, ESPN’s ombudsman, and the founder of the Sense-Making Project, and as lead faculty for the Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Journalism.
Kelly co-edited the groundbreaking book, “The New Ethics of Journalism: Principles for the 21st Century,” which argues for a new set of ethical guidelines for journalists, communicators and students and includes chapters by 14 thought leaders examining the challenges of building trust and ensuring credible media in service of community and democracy.
